Well, yesterday I decided to fix the leaky ball valve in my shower stall. It has been leaking for some time cause I dreaded trying to shut the water supply off to the house. There is no shut off valve at the fixture and the only thing to do is to shut the water off to the whole house at the meter.
The problem is there was at least 8 inches of dirt covering the meter and the shut off valve. I spent a good 20 minutes on my belly digging with a trowel until I could finally find the valve. After that, repair was a snap. I polished the ball valve and added a couple of new washers and springs and all was good to go.
Now every month, the guy from the water department comes by, lifts the lid on the water meter, looks down the hole, replaces the lid, and leaves. Every month we get a bill. It is usually about the same only varying no more than 2 or 3 dollars in either direction.
We just want to know what he has been looking at all this time? 8 inches of dirt? For all he knows, we could have been watering all the neighbors' yards. I left a little dirt on top of the meter when I finished. I didn't want to make life too easy on him. Small town life is a blast.
