Basketball's Christmas 2010

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Well, first & foremost, Zepparella was amazing last night. After a few coworkers decided not to go at the last minute, I decided to just go by myself…because it was going to be awesome…and I’m sure I’d meet a few ladies there…or at least some drunken gentlemen. Well, I was right on both counts. There was a wedding reception going on at the River Ranch Lodge, so the ladies were all dolled up & tipsy…but they also had their respective men by their sides constantly. Still not bad eye candy at all. I also found that my work buddy Pork Chop had also decided to go to the concert alone, so we hung out, had a few drinks (I only had a few early…but more on that later) and just had a great time at the concert. The venue was also the patio of the River Ranch Lodge, so it basically was just along the gorgeous Truckee River just after sunset. You know what? I’m just going to show you the pictures…

Zepparella came out and rocked our socks off for a few hours…and by the end of the concert, Pork Chop was pretty trashed. He had been there about six hours and drank the whole time. He’s a good guy from Brooklyn and a fellow Eagles fan, so it was all good. He’s also lived here in the area for about 18 years…and after last night, he’s drunkenly promised to show me all the great places to meet girls and have fun here. Not bad, right? So the concert’s over, I hadn’t had a drink since 10 PM and I give him a ride home because he lives right by my grocery store on the way back anyway (this was decided a few hours earlier). We’re driving back and I’m following this other car on the highway, just kinda going with the flow of traffic as there was a truck on my ass too. We were speeding a little…which was dumb…but hey, flow of traffic, right? Well, after a few miles, the truck that was on my ass flips on his lights. It was the highway patrol. To be fair, another truck pulled over the car that I was following too. They did it real coordinated like…because hey, I do live in the DUI capital of California as was mentioned to me several times the first night I was here. Sigh… so the fun begins…

I roll down the window, get the license & registration out, Pork Chop’s telling me it’s going to be okay, “Dude, I know. I’m not drunk.” The officer comes up, asks for the info, makes a comment about it smelling like a bar, “Yeah, I’m driving my buddy home here from the concert.” He asks me to step out of the car, quizzes me about what I’ve had to drink & when, writes it all down on a notepad, Pork Chop is talking to another cop…and he’s obviously drunk, then I kid you not, the officer puts me through EIGHT sobriety tests…and I pass them all. How do I know that I passed them? Because he kept giving them to me. Obviously if I failed ONE, I would’ve been thrown in the truck and taken somewhere or given a ticket. He kept giving me these tests…and after about ten minutes, I was just getting frustrated…because I had to pee something fierce, it was brisk, trickling a bit, and I didn’t have a coat on because it’s always warm inside of Gretchen. Then came the big test, which probably should’ve just been pulled out to begin with…but because DUI’s are so disputed in court, they like to have other tests to show impairment. Oh yeah, I’m talking about… “the Breathalyzer” (starring Jean Claude Van Damme). He gives me some speech about how I don’t have to consent to it…but then he basically just puts it in my face and says blow hard. I back up a bit because…hell, I don’t know where it’s been. “Just so you’re aware, telling somebody they don’t have to do it…and then putting it in their face like that, could be construed as misleading.” I know I have nothing to worry about…or do I? So I take the test. He looks at it. Gives me a look and says “You know the legal limit in California is 0.08, which is like having four beer in an hour…and anything over that I have to give you a citation.” “I shouldn’t even be CLOSE to that.” He looks at the Breathalyzer again, then shows me the reading – 0.045, like I said, nothing to worry about…but it doesn’t stop ya from being a little worried. He told me to watch my speed, get my friend home safe (seriously less than half a mile from where we were), and drive safe. I did. Slept like a log for…about four hours until I had to get up for work again. Good times. Please don’t drink & drive, ladies & gentlemen.

Now for the big impersonal news of yesterday, which was the 2010 NBA Draft a.k.a. Basketball’s Christmas. I think this is my 4th edition of reviewing the draft…and I’ve been fairly good with my predictions thus far. DeJuan Blair was the steal of last year’s draft by the Spurs, Greg Oden & Hasheem Thabeet were overrated as all hell, and the list goes on and on…but hey, it’s not an exact science. The draft is all about potential anymore. You can get a college senior who’s about as refined as he’s going to get…or some 19-year old kid who spent about six months on a college campus and can barely communicate thought…but he’s big and can put the ball in the hole sometimes (more on them later). There was also a lot of trades and stuff done to clear salary cap space so that teams could go after a bunch of free agents…so who knows if any of these guys will actually play for the team that drafted them or anything. It was just a weird draft to watch…but luckily after the first round, I had a concert to go to.

I actually read a little article earlier today that kinda tickled me. An ESPN columnist was talking about having watched Robert Pattinson (of “Twilight” fame) in his first real acting gig that was just released on DVD, “Remember Me.” You remember the cheesy romance story one from a few months back? Anyway, he said that Robert Pattinson was a HORRIBLE actor…like laughably bad…and I’ve seen “Twilight” so I obviously believe him. I think he compared it to a hybrid of Keanu Reeves & any athlete cameo on “Entourage” based on his performance. That being said, his wife said something like “At least he’s trying…and he has so much potential.” That’s kinda what the draft has turned into. Picking some guy that you haven’t really seen do much…and giving them millions of dollars based on what they could be if they really try and their work ethic matches their talents. By the way, my prediction, Robert Pattinson is never heard from again after they drag out the “Twilight” movies as long as humanly (vampirely) possible. I mean, they’ve already split the last book into two movies to prolong it. Just like my former doppelganger Daniel Radcliffe with the Harry Potter franchise. Anyway, back to basketball. Here are my thoughts on some key players in the draft…

NBA Draft 2010

1. Washington – John Wall – Guard from Kentucky – The kid’s alright. He’s got all the physical gifts and skills necessary to be a great point guard in this league (even though the Wizards are kind of gutted out since the ridiculous PR scenarios this past year). He’s been under tremendous media scrutiny for years and has handled it pretty well. What I like most about him…is that he’s apparently a pretty smart dude too, went to class & got good grades (granted he was only in college for a few months). I have no problem with him going as the number one pick, especially to a team like the Wizards who could really use somebody with half a noggin. I had my reservations about Derrick Rose when he came out after one year a few years back…and this looks like the exact same thing. We shall see how he does…but yeah, I like this kid.

2. Philadelphia – Evan Turner – Guard from Ohio State – I like this kid too…and after having a back surgery midseason last year…and only missing 6 games or something like that…and went on to be the National Player of the Year, that can only give you more street cred in the hard-nosed city of Philly. He’s versatile, pretty good jumper, decent defender, the only question I have…is he’s pretty much the same kind of player that Andre Igoudala is, right? Maybe a little smaller? So…are they expecting to get rid of him soon? Either way, I think the 76ers are covered at the swingman position. Two are always better than one (unless they start bickering like schoolchildren).

3. New Jersey – Derrick Favors – Forward from Georgia Tech – This guy has been hyped for years, since his high school days in Atlanta. I get it, he’s a physical specimen and can learn to be a dominating post player. However, I thought his teammate Gani Lawal was actually a better player than he was…but Gani fell to the 2nd round where the Suns picked him up (not a bad snag). He just didn’t blow me away at all. I’m sure with the right tutoring (Georgia Tech was kind of a bad program for him…but it was in his hometown and he knew he was only going to be there as long as he absolutely had to) I’m sure he could blossom…and with the Nets willing to do whatever it takes to make a winner & Avery Johnson’s a great coach (and he speaks Favors first language of Southern Gibberish too) he could be a great player…or not. We shall see. The Nets also ended up getting a solid player like Damion James out of Texas in exchange for drafted guard Jordan Crawford out of Xavier with the 27th pick. Who’s he? Remember a few years back the video of some teenager dunking on LeBron at a basketball camp? This is the guy. Other than that, I’ve only seen him play once…and it wasn’t too impressive. Damion though is a great defender, rebounder and had flashes of greatness for the Longhorns. If he makes the team, at least they can say that they did sign a James this off-season if LeBron goes elsewhere. Very good PR move.

4. Minnesota – Wesley Johnson – Forward from Syracuse – After getting a bunch of point guards last year, and facing the challenge of having like 18 players under contract & they want to get the hell outta there, the T-Wolves had an awkward situation going into draft day. The one thing they did have was a couple young big guys (Al Jefferson & my brother from another mother Kevin Love) so they went with a lanky swingman who can pop the three and rebound pretty well. The few Syracuse games I saw, he didn’t really impress me as much as everybody seemed to think about him…but he does have some seasoned skills and should help immediately. I see him as the same kind of player that Corey Brewer was though…without the defensive stopping ability, so I’m skeptical at best. I hope he proves me wrong. My favorite pick by the Wolves though, was Reno-born & bred forward Luke Babbitt at number 16. He’s the best shooting forward in the draft and in his two years at Nevada-Reno, he was the WAC player of the year. Granted that’s not incredibly impressive per se…but he shot something like 55% from the field, 40% from threes & mid-90’s on free throws. I like fundamentals. Sue me.

5. Sacramento – DeMarcus Cousins – Center from Kentucky – I think the Kings made a GREAT pick with Cousins. I really liked his game…and he really can only improve. I also believe that he believes he can handle the pressures of being the face of a franchise (in time). Tyreke Evans at guard, Cousins at the power forward spot & recently acquired Samuel Dalembert as a shot-swatting center with other decent role players make the Kings a theoretically good team of the future. I’m a little confused why they also drafted center Hassan Whiteside out of Marshall at number 33 but as the Lakers have taught us, you can never be too big in the NBA. So really they drafted two high potential projects that could really pay off…but there’s no pressure because they’re the Kings in the they’re the only game in Sac Town. “Oh you don’t like it. Why don’t you take your ass to Oakland and be a Warriors fan?” I like the picks…and am eager to see how they grow.

6. Golden State – Epke Udoh – Center from Baylor – As you may know, I LOVED watching Baylor in the tournament. Udoh was blocking shots and making big buckets, that reserve Acie was shooting nothing but dunks and getting 5-6 a game, and you just have to root for an underdog team that hasn’t won anything since they were shooting at peach baskets pretty much. I’m a big fan of the shot blockers…and Udoh is one of the best in this class…and a great rebounder too, which is exactly what the Warriors need – somebody to grab all those missed shots and provide something that resembles a defense…and luckily he can run the floor pretty well too. It’s really a great fit given that one of his drawbacks is a fairly light frame for a big guy…and he’s undersized at 6-9 to match up with most centers. I really liked this pick and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Are the Warriors still going to suck? Probably…but I don’t think anybody else would’ve really helped them out more in that aspect.

7. Detroit – Greg Monroe – Forward from Georgetown – I was really hoping he’d slip to Utah…but he’s a great fit for Detroit and the kind of inside presence that they desperately need. I kinda see him as a Ben Wallace who can score, which is what everybody wants, right? He’s a good physical player who can really blossom in a fitting system…and that’s really what the draft is about after pick number five, finding the best player for your system (why teams like the Jazz & Spurs have been so good for decades). I also liked their 2nd round pick, point guard Terrico White out of Ole Miss with number 36. He’s a little ball of energy that could work really well in Detroit too.

8. L.A. Clippers – Al-Farouq Aminu – Forward from Wake Forest – The Clippers just seem to be cursed. Period. Last year’s number one overall pick Blake Griffin…will hopefully play his first NBA game in October after having a patella injury sideline him all of last year. That being said, they have the players to at least appear to be a decent team with Baron Davis, young guys like Griffin & Al Thornton, and an All-Star center in Chris Kaman. Why do they still suck? Cursed. Well, new to the curse is a man who is a decent rebounder and scorer at Wake Forest…and I just kinda like saying his name. Another funny thing from that article earlier, is that his name translated to “The Chief has Arrived” which his buddy said “I’m going to scream that name during my next 25 orgasms.” I have to agree. Al FAROOK A-ME-NOOOoooo… Given the curse though, he may be working for Al Qaeda and blow up the Staples Center with Kobe inside and afterwards we’ll all be like “How could we have possibly known?” Granted, I don’t really see that happening…but then again, I wouldn’t be surprised. I hope the Clippers get good. Just so people can realize that there IS another team in LA that plays at the Staples Center in the same league. I think parking is free if you go to a Clippers game whereas it’s standing room only when Kobe’s in town. Oh…and their other pick Willie Warren out of Oklahoma is a pretty good player…but needs a good institution to develop him. He’s probably not going to find it here.

9. Utah – Gordon Hayward – Forward from Butler – Sigh… I saw it fatidic that Gordon would go one pick later. Born & raised in Indiana, college in Indianapolis, JUST lost national championship there, and then drafted by the Indiana Pacers. Seriously, if you would’ve told ANYBODY, even his mother, at the end of the Horizon League championship…that four months from now, Gordon Hayward would be a top-10 pick in the NBA Draft, you would’ve been committed to an institution. But…after a magical three week run in March Madness, an apparently great workout, and finding the right system, voila. Gordon’s going to Slick City to fill a niche on an already good team under the tutelage of coach Jerry Sloan. This kid is living MY f**king dream (granted almost a decade later). Oh well, I’m sure he’ll be great. Then again, I was going to bring this up with Udoh earlier. There’ve been a LOT of players who had great runs in the tournament, were drafted high because of it, and then just sucked in the pros. Miles Simon comes to mind. What? You don’t remember him. Don’t feel bad. Anyway, hope this guys does okay. One thing’s for sure though, the ladies in Slick City are going to love this kid. If somebody like Kyle Korver (aka Ashton Kutcher with down syndrome) can be considered sexy there, this guy’s got it made…and a note of advice, if somebody asks you were you served your mission, just say Indiana. Who cares if your mission was to make it to the NBA and they think you were riding a bike & talking about Joseph Smith for two years?

11. New Orleans (to OKC) – Cole Aldrich – Center from Kansas – Every time I look at this guy, I just think of Greg Ostertag. I know that he can make a shot or two and that was something that Greg could never do…but yeah, it may just be me. Anyway, the Thunder needed some size and they sure got it with this guy. He was drafted by the Hornets then traded to the Thunder in exchange for forward Craig Brackins, pick #21 out of Iowa State and the 26th pick, Quincy Pondexter out of Washington…who I think will be one of the best players to come out of this draft honestly. I like his game. We’ll see how it goes in the Big Easy for him. Anyway, back to Cole. I see him as a decent big guy, not a go-to or anything…and I like that the Thunder also picked up a guard like Eric Bledsoe out of Kentucky with the 18th pick and in the 2nd round, I had never heard of this guy…but he has my favorite name of this year’s draft – “With the 51st pick, the Oklahoma City Thunder select…Magnum Rolle.” That sounds like a street-wise detective who don’t take no guff off’n nobody, Jack!!!

20. San Antonio – James Anderson – Guard from Oklahoma State (not the famous cricketer) – SOOOO glad the Spurs picked up this guy. He’s EXACTLY what they needed (given what was available). He’s a shooter. Pure & simple. You need a three? Bombs away. Somebody to hit those clutch free throws? This guy. He was the Big 12 player of the year…and I think he may turn out to be one of the steals of the draft for the Spurs yet again this year. I don’t care if this guy was picked up by the Clippers or T-Wolves or anything, he can play. Oh…and of course with their other pick, they kept up the international tradition by going for some seven-foot guy named Ryan Richards out of England with the 49th pick. Hope he’s awesome. Never heard of him…but I said the same thing about guys like Emmanuel Ginobili and this one French point guard named Tony Parker when they were drafted…and they turned out pretty good.

29. Orlando – Daniel Orton – Center from Kentucky – Sigh… this is the Robert Pattinson Theory from earlier personified. I’m just going to drop a little nugget on you guys…and tell me if you think this is right. Scottie Reynolds of Villanova was an All-American 1st Team guard this year. He has been a distinguished leader of a few squads that made major tournament runs…and holds a bunch of school records because he stayed for four years and earned a degree. Oh…and the All-American 1st team thing, means that he is one of the 5 BEST players in the country. There are sixty players drafted each year. Yet he was not drafted. Daniel Orton averaged 3 points & 3 rebounds per game, coming off the bench during his one year at Kentucky. One of the greatest moments of my draft viewing yesterday…was when they showed that the man couldn’t even say his own f**king name while trying to introduce himself during a commercial segway shot. Seriously. I’m not making it up. Well, scouts must’ve loved the way that he cheered on his teammates from the bench because he was drafted in the 1st round as a project for possibly backing up Dwight Howard…and Marcin Gortat…so a third-string center…but will be tutored by Patrick Ewing. Why? Does that seem right? Well, like I’ve said for years. You can’t teach height…and he’s a 7-foot, 300-pound man-child with obviously only one way to go. Nothing against Daniel…but I hope he flops. He should’ve stayed in school and gotten himself an edumacation. Who am I kidding? I’d take the money too & never look back. Orlando got back on my good side by drafting a senior forward from UConn in Stanley Robinson with the 59th pick. He had flashes of greatness too…but should make for a great role player in the league.

32. Miami – Dexter Pittman – Center from Texas – The Heat made a few picks that I really liked given that they’ve just been trying to unload contracts so that they could resign Dwyane Wade and get a few new big time free agents, then just fill in the roster after that. Pittman was f**king HUGE when he came into Texas as a freshman. Like…I feared for his life huge. He had some skills though…and has trimmed down to 300 pounds or whatever (yes, that IS trimmed down) so he could be a presence in the paint. I also like the shot-blockers, which is why I like their pick of Mississippi State center Jarvis Varnado at #41. He holds the NCAA career blocked shots record at over five a game for his four years there. Yeah, he’s not the best player…but he’s really just as good as Hasheem Thabeet is…only about six inches shorter. So with a 2nd round pick, you can’t really go wrong, right? Also, I like that they picked up Da’Sean Butler out of West Virginia. Hopefully he recovers completely from that injury during the tournament. Good luck with the free agents!!!

43. L.A. Lakers - Devin Ebanks – Forward from West Virginia – Sigh… I hate to say it…but the Lakers got a good pick with this guy. He plays a lot like Trevor Ariza did for them during their championship run two years ago…and he’s still growing as a player. Son of a b**ch!!!

52. Boston – Luke Harangody – Forward from Notre Dame – If there’s ever a redheaded center (Brian Scalabrine) or an underrated white guy who had a great career at a college whose mascot was Irish…then you can bet that the Boston Celtics are going to draft them. Harangody can score, rebound, play the post as good as anybody out there in the draft field really. However, I don’t wanna be that guy, but there is a bit of a stigma when it comes to taking Caucasian males in the first round. Don’t give me that look. It’s founded on tradition from guys like Todd Fuller, Keith Van Horn, Mark Madsen, Spencer Hawes, Adam Keefe, Adam Morrison, Shawn Bradley, Darko Milicic, Sam Bowie, Eric Montross, Nikolai Tschizvili (or however you spell that guy Denver drafted a few years back), the list goes on & on. Who knows? Maybe Luke will suck in the pros…but I think Boston’s the perfect place for his physical nature and multitude of skills to thrive. In fact, I see him as an All-Rookie 2nd team player next year since Rasheed Wallace is retiring & injuries are always a problem with the Celtics. There. I said it. And don’t think that I won’t bring it up in the future when it comes true. Oh…and their first round pickup of Texas guard Avery Bradley could prove to be huge too…but I honestly didn’t seem him play much his one year. Note: My observations of previous Texas picks like Damion James & Dexter Pittman were off their four-year careers with the program (like back when Kevin Durant was on the team & they were relevant).

A new twist this year! In my hopes of keeping this blog ever-fresh and growing, I’m going to make a prediction for the All-Rookie 1st team based on what I know now…and I’ll compare it at the end of next season to see if I was even close. So here it goes…

Guard – John Wall
Guard – James Anderson
Forward – Evan Turner
Forward – Greg Monroe
Center – DeMarcus Cousins

Wish me luck!!! Oh…and I’m pretty sure John Wall gets Rookie of the Year though I’m not sure how they’re planning on the whole him & Devin Harris being on the same team thing. Well, that’ll do it for today. Had a b**ching concert & Christmas all on the same post…so now I just have to figure out how I’m going to spend my weekend. Maybe I can find something non-alcoholic to do…but it’s always nice to have options. Have a great day everybody!!!

Scrounging for Change

Good Afternoon Ladies & Gentlemen,

Whew… Busy time at work, which I guess means job security, and that the days whiz right by, but it’d be nice to have somebody else I could hand off duties to if I, for example, wanted to use my over two months of paid vacation saved up. Oh yeah. You think I was traveling before? Just wait until winter comes back and I’m “forced” to go on vacation by year’s end. Anyway, that’s a little down the road. In the meantime, I had a late night softball game last night. We lost pretty horribly, but I went 1 for 2 with a double and a run…but we had single-digit runs in softball, which is pretty bad. Stoked for the Zepparella concert tonight!!! It should be awesome. Again have no idea what to do this weekend, but there’s plenty of opportunity to get drunk with the Reno Pub Crawl and a Wine Walk at the Northstar ski resort available for a cheap date. Then again, if that’s all I wanted to do, I could just do that at home. Next week my dad & stepmom will be visiting for the 4th of July week. It should be a good time…and I’ve been needing it. Been kinda lonely the past few days…and it doesn’t help that a few of my friends have been feeling the same…but hey, I’m here for them. I kid you not, with work & friends, yesterday I was on the phone from 6 AM to 8 PM, then played softball & had a few voicemails waiting for me when I was done. Though I may be hundreds or thousands of miles away, they know they can call me anytime…and I’m usually pretty good about cheering them up, even when I’m in a less-than-silly mood. I have no idea why I should be feeling the way I do…but I figure it’s probably just hormones or something and will pass in a few days. It is a full moon…and it was gorgeous last night. Anyway, enough of my jabbering, here’s some news…

GOOOOOOOL!!! – Apparently the United States defied all odds and actually WON a soccer game in the World Cup in dramatic fashion (over Algeria) to move on into the elimination tournament of 16 teams. Take that Britain!!! That’s ugh… really all I have on this. There’s more on the link if you want to read on but… it’s soccer. The NBA Draft (aka Christmas) is tonight…so there’ll be MUCH more on that come Friday. Next…

Naked Cowgirl - New York City's famous Naked Cowboy wants a bikini-clad woman who calls herself “The Naked Cowgirl” to stop ripping off his trademark. The Times Square cowboy, whose real name is Robert Burck, is known for strumming his guitar wearing only briefs and a cowboy hat (can I see the patent on that?). He has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Sandy Kane, who wears a red, white and blue cowboy hat and matching bikini. Burck says if Kane's going to make money by posing for photos, he wants her to sign a "Naked Cowboy Franchise Agreement." Most of his licensed franchisees (how many are there?) are required to pay $5,000 a year or $500 a month and go through a screening process. Kane, who is in her 50s (shiver), is a former stripper who's now a fixture of the city comedy scene. Her real name is Sandra Brodsky. She says she doesn't owe Burck anything. He’ll let the courts decide…but I’ve often considered becoming a street performer (as I discussed with Bubbles the other day when her heart was broken about the breakdancers from my latest trip not actually being with DARE, GASP!!!). When you work for tax-free tips, there’s a reason so many people do it. Have you ever trailed a scruffy street performer when they’re done with their gig…and watched them go around the corner…and hop into their Lexus? Oh yes. Think about it. You’re sitting there playing pretty basic guitar riffs and singing the wrong words to “American Pie” and the like for maybe three hours a day…and let’s say on a slow day, somebody throws a dollar into your hat, about once a minute. You just made about $200 tax-free…on a slow day. Yeah! See my point? How many of you out there make less than half that for a full 8 hour day & Uncle Sam gets just as much? Oh, my hand is definitely raised. It’s a twisted world we live in sometimes. Oh well, if you’ve got talent, let it out…and feel free to capitalize on it. God knows I would… but apparently prostitution’s illegal and that’s the realm where all my talents lie. Oh well, I’ll just need to develop some talents…and THEN…

Possible New Home - Listed as a "monument to unparalleled success," the largest home for sale in the United States comes with plenty of space but no carpet, tiles or interior walls. It's up to the future buyer to finish it. The mansion started by timeshare tycoon David Siegel boasts plenty of big numbers like 90,000 square feet, 23 bathrooms, 13 bedrooms,10 kitchens, a 20-car garage, with additional space for two limos, 3 pools, a bowling alley, an indoor roller rink, a two-story movie theater, video arcade, fitness center, even a baseball field and two tennis courts. All that and more for $75 million "as is." There's an option to buy it completed for $100 million (Really? $25 million for furniture?). Nicknamed "Versailles" for the French royal palace that inspired it, the edifice hit the market recently. Construction was halted last year to save money in a recession that proved particularly hard on Siegel's once-booming industry. "This mansion is a great anecdote of the over-consumption that led to the housing bust, and it might be the poster child of such overindulgence," said Jack McCabe, a Florida-based real estate analyst (and worst salesman ever). The unfinished palace at 6121 Kirkstone Lane makes Tiger Woods' place just down the street in this gated Orlando suburb look more like a guest house. It has the square footage of nearly two football fields, is almost double the White House and about 36 times the size of the average American family home. The master bedroom alone, which would have had a rotating bed under a skylight, is twice the size of a standard house. "It's like a living piece of art," said Lorraine Barrett, a Coldwell Banker real estate agent who has the listing. At least it will be upon completion. Instead of stonewalled gates, a chain-link fence with a green covering keeps onlookers out of the 10-acre property. The driveway is overrun with dirt and rocks. Weeds fill the planned baseball field. The home opens into a grand hall with symmetrical staircases and a ceiling complete with a stained-glass dome befitting a cathedral. The rest of the mansion is more an outline with only steel beams, insulation and most of the electrical wiring in place. The two elevator shafts are empty. Stone for the exterior is waiting in boxes that fill the cavernous garage. The Olympic-length pool that will have a waterfall flowing into another pool is a carved-out shell. A cleaning company has to come to the vacant mansion to keep things tidy. "He figured it would be for his family. They'd never have to leave, because they would have everything they needed here," Barrett said during a recent tour of the mansion. "Nothing broke his heart more." She said Siegel, who has 12 children, could have easily moved forward with construction but wanted to avoid cutbacks at his company, Westgate Resorts. Requests to interview Siegel were not returned through Westgate Resorts or Barrett. Selling a high-end home is never easy, and that's only magnified in this recovering market. However, Sheri Chase, founder and president of Chase Realty International, has had the listing for a $100 million estate here in Lake Tahoe for about four years. The 20,000-square-foot home on 210 acres of property is owned by Tommy Hilfiger co-founder Joel Horowitz. Chase said "There are only so many billionaires in the world. Who's looking at prices in this stratosphere? Very few people, so patience is key." (Just wait until I get some talent) There also aren't many homes in the U.S. priced so high. The Lake Tahoe estate is the third-most expensive on the market, according to the annual ranking by Forbes magazine. That's only behind a $150 million mansion in Holmby Hills, California owned by Candy Spelling, widow of television giant Aaron Spelling. Another Holmby Hills mansion owned by Suzanne Saperstein, the ex-wife of Texas billionaire David Saperstein, has a $125 million asking price. In 2008, a Russian billionaire bought Donald Trump's Palm Beach mansion for $95 million. Trump had asked for $125 million. The Versailles mansion, inspired by a visit to the real palace near Paris on the Siegel's honeymoon in 2000 (I was there a year earlier, it’s amazing), is currently tied for fifth by price with several others. But it has, by all accounts, the most square footage under one roof in America for a home after the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. The structure might not look so massive from the front. The foundation sits some 20 feet below the rest of the block — making the entrance to the home on the second floor. Why? Because there's a 47-foot height restriction in the community. In reality, the mansion is 67 feet high. It's not cheap to maintain, either. Taxes alone on the property, if sold at $100 million, would be between $1.45 million and $1.74 million annually, according to the Orange County property appraiser's website. The yearly upkeep also would likely fall in that range, real estate agents said. "It's going to take a very unique kind of buyer to purchase the property," said Carol Ann Hewitt, who has listings for high-end homes in Windermere for Oxford Realty. "I'm not going to say it's impossible, but it could take a while." Besides, who the hell wants to go to Orlando? I don’t golf. However, that mansion here in Tahoe may be something else… I wonder where that’s located. I think it’s on the Nevada side. Hell, it’s probably perched on a cliff overlooking my favorite spot. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Hell, if they need somebody to maintain it while it’s on the market, I may have to update my resume…to go along with the current job and my street entertaining…

Country of Beggars – “Change?” “No thanks. I’ve got enough already.” Ever used that? It’s funny (though a little spiteful) but now there’s an entire country asking for your change. Romania's cash-strapped government is asking for donations to a fund set up to boost budget revenues and cushion the impact of the economic crisis, the finance ministry said on Friday. Earlier this week, the centrist coalition cabinet narrowly won a no-confidence vote in parliament over sharp public sector wage and pensions cuts, key to keeping afloat its 20 billion-Euro aid package led by the International Monetary Fund. "Every person in Romania, except for legal entities, can donate cash into this account," the finance ministry said in a statement introducing its "solidarity fund." When enforced, pay cuts will buy Romania time to reform its sprawling inefficient public administration and counter tax evasion, which should boost budget revenues. But with tax receipts expected to disappoint in the first half of the year, every little bit that can be spared is a help. Officials said the new fund is aimed at public officials who earn additional income on top of regular wages by serving on administrative boards of companies entirely or partially owned by the state (so, people who worked more?). Prime Minister Emil Boc has also said he will donate his wages to the fund (since he already gets a free house, meals & whatever else being Prime Minister), but the account is open to anyone who wishes to contribute. Donations can be made by bank transfer to a special account and a list of donations will subsequently be published on the ministry's website. So if you’ve ever wanted to go onto a government website and see that “Dr Mookie Love, of Funkatron, in the United States donated $20” (or like a thousand Romanian New Leu since they don’t do the Euro) or I’m sure you could do something more personally gratifying like “Joe Loves Rachel donated $10” or even “Romania Blows donated $0.25” but you’d be doing a good thing. However, I don’t know if I can fully get behind this. Why? Well, if I’m going to give you some change, I expect you to at least try a little bit for it. Not just say “Hey, if you could just forward some money to my international bank account, that’d be awesome.” Hell, if you want some real money, just ask the ladies in Reno, you gotta do a little something for it. At least do a little dance, sing a song of my praises, tell me a funny joke, come on. I’ve seen some of your fine Romanian exports. You’ve got some lovely ladies out there. Put a smile on my face & we’ll see that account blow up. Is that so wrong? Well, okay maybe it got a little wrong towards the end…but you get my drift. Earn this money.

Swinging or Pimpin’? – You know, it’s funny how a lot of my little stories transition right into the next so flawlessly. Do I design it that way? Not really. It’s fatidic. Oh that’s a real word. One of my new favorites. Have you ever wondered which method of sexual exploration is safer, swinging or prostitution? Really? Your sexual life is a lot more active than mine then. Well, scientists studying swingers (straight couples who regularly swap sexual partners and indulge in group sex at organized meetings) say they have higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than prostitutes. I’m going to repeat that for the cheap seats. According to studies, you’re more likely to get a disease through swinging (or as I like to call it, a four-gy) than if you’re turning tricks a dozen times a night. Think about it. Dutch researchers publishing their work in the British Medical Journal showed that older swingers (those over the age of 45) are particularly vulnerable and yet are a group largely ignored by healthcare services (mostly because they don’t want to think about middle-aged Dutch people having sloppy sex in mayonnaise or something). With estimates that the swinger population could be many millions across the world, the scientists said there was a risk this untreated group could act as an STI "transmission bridge to the entire population." "Although exact estimates are unavailable, the swingers' population is probably large," wrote Anne-Marie Niekamp, who worked on the study with colleagues from Maastricht University. The Dutch study analyzed the numbers of patients seeking treatment in 2007 and 2008 at three sexual health clinics in South Limburg in the Netherlands. The clinics have recorded whether a patient is a swinger since the start of 2007, in an attempt to track infection rates among this group. During the study period, there were just under 9,000 consultations at the three clinics. One in nine of the patients was a swinger, with an average age of 43. Overall, combined rates of Chlamydia and gonorrhea were just over 10% among straight people, 14% among gay men, just under 5% in female prostitutes (God I want to go to Amsterdam), and 10.4% among swingers, they found. And female swingers had higher infection rates than male swingers. One in 10 older swingers had Chlamydia and around one in 20 had gonorrhea. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease among women and in 70% of cases causes no symptoms. The bacterial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection which can also lead to infertility if left untreated. Niekamp said that while other high risk groups, such as young straight people, gay men and prostitutes, were relatively easy for healthcare service to identify and target for advice and help, swingers were generally a hidden community. "That makes them very hard to reach," she said in a telephone interview. "Because they are so hidden and in some ways also stigmatized, it is hard for them to come forward for STI testing and treatment." Okay, so just to elaborate, this is in the Netherlands…and their prostitution industry is pretty strictly monitored and I think they have health benefits and stuff like that, which is completely different from here in the States, so don’t go out there thinking every lady of the evening has a 95% change of being clean as a well-used whistle. However, it just goes to show that you can’t really be too careful out there trying to find your sexual thrills. I’ve never done swinging…and as mentioned before, I’m typically old-fashioned when it comes to this stuff…but I’m always down for new things. I guess the moral is, please be careful out there…and use protection…and get checked regularly. I want you all to get your freak on for a long time to come.

Death of the Soap Opera? - On September 17, TV's oldest daytime drama (“As the World Turns” airing weekdays at 2 p.m. EDT until then) will fold. On Wednesday, "ATWT" wrapped production forever. "It's been a job and a home and friendships for 50 years," said Don Hastings, an avuncular, era-spanning presence on the show since literally before Kennedy was shot as he pondered the series' end. "I don't think it's hit me yet." The summer after CBS' "Guiding Light" was cut down after 72 years on radio and then television, the doomsday scenario that has plagued soaps for decades has now claimed "ATWT." ABC's "General Hospital," which premiered in April 1963, will now inherit the title as TV's oldest soap. But who knows for how long? Used to be, at any given time there were a dozen or more daytime dramas on the networks. Soon there will be only six, with only ABC's "One Life to Live" still originating in New York. The ratings for all of them are a fraction of what they once were, and continue in a downward spiral. "ATWT," ranked last, this season is averaging 2.4 million viewers, whereas in the 1991-92 season, it drew 6.7 million viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. "This show was created in the 1950s, and now there are different viewing patterns, different economic models, and we're all fighting a tough fight to stay in the business," said Chris Goutman, "ATWT" executive producer since 1999. "Daytime has been in trouble for a long time, and we're part of that bigger picture. But when was the time that I thought we were fighting a losing battle? Never. I always think we're going to win the battle. But this time we didn't." Last December, CBS made it official, a death decree that, paired with the demise of "Guiding Light," marks the exit of Procter & Gamble's production arm from the soap opera business. This, of course, is a company for which the term "soap opera" was coined in the radio era when it began deploying such shows to advertise its detergent and soap products. Now you know where it comes from. Like many soaps, "ATWT" is set in a bucolic but scandal-beset Midwestern burg — in this case, Oakdale, Illinois. Having always centered on two families (the Lowells and the Hugheses) it premiered April 2, 1956, with mild-mannered Nancy Hughes voicing the words, "Good morning, dear." She was played by Helen Wagner, who was among those seen on that fateful episode the day Kennedy died (it’s on YouTube) and made occasional appearances as recently as this spring. She passed away in May at age 91. Hastings and Eileen Fulton (who joined "ATWT" in May 1960 as the vixenish Lisa Grimaldi) are now the senior cast members. Longevity, of course, is a hallmark of soap operas. Unique in the otherwise mercurial world of TV, the life spans of successful soaps are measured in decades, even generations, not fleeting seasons. Firm bonds are formed by viewers with a soap and its characters, as well as the actors who play them…and keep playing them for nearly half a century. But the question arises, does this mean that soap operas will soon go the way of the dinosaur, the Dodo and the Unicorn? I guess only time will tell…and there’s always Telemundo, which is just fun to watch even if you don’t speak Spanish. You get the gist of it.

Bacon Update with Unicorns – See? Another seamless transition from soon-to-be extinct television formats to thought-to-be extinct mammals. I’m sorry to break your hearts yet again…but it's official: The National Pork Board says it KNOWS unicorns don't exist. Why would the geniuses who brought us such staples of the American diet as bacon, pork chops, bacon, pig’s feet & bacon even mention anything to do with Unicorns a.k.a. Horny horses? The industry group says it was only protecting its trademark when it issued cease-and-desist warning to online retailer ThinkGeek for calling a fake unicorn meat product "the new white meat." The fictional canned meat, described as an "excellent source of sparkles," was an April Fool's prank. But the 12-page letter from the board's law firm was no joke. "We certainly offered our apologies," Scott Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet Inc., the parent company of ThinkGeek, told the Associated Press. "It was not our intention to confuse the public as to the attributes and qualities of the two meats." In a public apology this week, ThinkGeek said its nonexistent canned unicorn meat is sparkly, a bit red and not approved by any government entity. "We certainly understand that unicorns don't exist," said Ceci Snyder, vice president of marketing for the National Pork Board. "Yes, it's funny. But if you don't respond, you are opening your trademark up to challenges." The council said it is in discussions with the company. "Where we feel victimized, is I don't know of another organization that does more to promote pork products than our site," Kauffman said, noting the company sells around 20 real items related to bacon, such as bacon gumballs and bacon soap (mmm…that might warrant a search of the website). ThinkGeek "launches" mock products every April Fool's day. The company said it was surprised the board did not raise any concerns about another prank item this year called "My First Bacon" — a talking stuffed toy that looked like a piece of bacon (I think little Vinny’s got a new Christmas present). He said, "To be attacked in this manner, given all we do for pork, the irony is not lost on us." Nor on us, Scott. Then again, copyright infringement is copyright infringement. I’m sure that Unicorn Meat was probably your top seller…but I wonder if anybody actually eats the contents. “Hmm… is that… is that glitter? This looks like spam rolled around on the floor of a rave.” Really? That’s going to make you half-vomit? Didn’t you read earlier when I was talking about the middle-aged Dutch couples in a mayo-orgy? Mmm delicious…

Well, on that note, I think I’ll stop for the day. I know usually I end it with a good joke or a bunch of sexy pictures but… I’m going to see Zepparella tonight!!! What? Sigh… okay, I’ll give you some pictures to get you hyped for the concert too…and get that image out of your head. Have a great night everybody!!!

Big Legged Woman Ain't Got No Soul

Good Morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

Yesterday was pretty awesome. But I'm gonna make you read to get to the best part, the Zepparella concert. I slept in (which I really enjoyed) and then decided to go take a walk, since it was a beautiful morning. About ten minutes into my walk, the clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped quickly. I kept going though...and had a nice hour walk to get the blood flowing.

When I got back home, I was flipping though the channels and decided to watch "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist" starring Michael Cera and...the teenage girl from 40 Year Old Virgin (I think her name was Kat). Basically, as you could tell from the previews, it's about a guy (Cera) who is still hung up on his now ex-girlfriend and makes her a bunch of mix CDs, that she basically passes on to her friend (Kat) who really likes them. Anyway, there's this band playing in the big city...and they both go separately to try to find them (because apparently it's a secret concert) and they meet up...and yeah, I'm already bored too. It's one of those teenage drama romantic comedy things...and it's okay but...not my cup of tea. It's kinda cute at points...but mostly it just makes me bitter that people have so much drama for no reason sometimes. It's like "Really? Suck it up. Move on."

Shortly after that, I made my way to the North Shore area and stopped by my favorite spot so far, the beach. I took a few shots. Hope you enjoy...

After that, I went to get the ticket to Zepparella at the Cal Neva Resort & Spa in Incline Village (like two miles from the beach). Here are some photos of the North Lake Tahoe equivalent of the Las Vegas Strip...
Chief Joseph
I don't think that's a heated pool...
Yes, it may look like it's the size of a Starbucks...
but it's a casino
Oh yeah, eat your heart out, Las Vegas Boulevard!!!

For dinner though, I decided to go preview the Tahoe City area, where they will be hosting the 1st Annual Prohibition Pub Crawl in less than three weeks when my mom comes to visit. I had fish tacos at the Blue Agave, a pretty nice Mexican bar & grill. Here are some pictures of the area...
Congrats to some local Olympians!!!

Then I made my way back to Cal Neva so that I could have me a few pre-show drinks, throw some money away at the roulette wheel, and meet a few neat people. Drinks & losing a lot of money for nothing will do that (experience at casinos & gentlemen's clubs). Regardless, I made a few concert buddies, including a guy from Reno who was there with his friend & their wives, we were fascinated by the Frank Sinatra Showroom (oh yeah, Sinatra was big there) and how music is so completely different now than in the 70's when Led Zeppelin was around. For example, one of the songs while we were waiting was "I'm Getting Closer to My Hooooooome..." which I'm sure every single one of you know...but can you tell me who sings it? Also, did you realize that's the only lyric, over & over again, for the entire song? I had never realized it before (and I had to Google it to tell you that it's Grand Funk Railroad that sings it). Would that be a hit today? Would Led Zeppelin be the greatest rock band of all time if they were around these days...or would they be just another band struggling for gigs due to their controversial lyrics & unhealthy lifestyle? Well, thank God we have ZEPPARELLA!!!!

Again, Zepparella is an all-female Led Zeppelin cover band...and they can f**king ROCK!!! The drummer Clementine must've signed a contract with the devil to play the drums just like Bonham, the lead singer Anna is apparently also a popular Bay Area stage performer...but really belts out the Robert Plant passion-filled lyrics with her own twist on them (you know, being a woman as opposed to a horny man in tight leather pants), and the bass player Nila makes you feel it in your bones. However, throughout the show, I was drawn to the lead guitarist...both for the eye candy...and her undeniable skills on the git box. Please enjoy the pictures...
Starts with pics of Marilyn & the Rat Pack? Good sign.
ZEPPARELLA!!!
Oh yeah, she's even pulling out the cello bow

Oh...and I almost forgot to mention, the lead guitarist's name was announced at the end of the show...and it's Gretchen. Yeah. Gretchen, the name that I've always mysteriously been captivated by...yet had no idea why. Awesome, right? So I had to meet them after the show...if not just for that. Thanks to the Roulette Wheel, I was all out of cash so I didn't buy T-shirts & CDs and what-not (sorry ladies, I'll get some next time you come to town or if you're back home in San Fran soon or something, pinky swear) but I basically said something along the lines of "You ladies were amazing tonight. TRULY amazing!!! And by the way, Gretchen is quite possibly my favorite name of all time." "Well, I'm pretty partial to it myself. Hahahaha!!!" "You ladies want a drink or anything?" "No thanks, we've got to get things packed up & get to bed." "Well, if you need help getting tucked in..." "Hahaha, thanks, but I've got it covered." "Alright, well it was nice to meet you ladies. Hope to see you again here soon." Great night...and I may have been a little buzzed still...but was quickly sobered by the snowy drive home around midnight. Please go check these ladies out when/if they come to your deck of the woods. If you love Zeppelin, you'll LOVE Zepparella.

Anyway, that was yesterday...and today will probably be a bunch of laundry and cleaning and stuff. P.S. I've been watching a lot of these "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" shows on the Travel Channel...and it's oddly making me want to travel internationally again very soon. I've had my new passport for almost a year now...and there's no stamps on it. That has to change soon. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on that. Have a great weekend everybody!!!
