Job Description – Video Compression Algorithm Engineer (Staff/Principal)

Magnum Semiconductor is currently seeking a highly qualified Video Compression Algorithm Engineer based at our Milpitas, California headquarters
The successful candidate will be working as part of a team on the development of next generation video coding technologies and standards, such as the new High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC) and its extensions. They will also be responsible for the development of new video processing and codec algorithms for embedded applications on Magnum's industry-leading next generation professional encoder/transcoder platform. This may involve development of initial implementations to identify technical hurdles of, prove feasibility, and characterize new technologies through application of specialized technical knowledge.
You will also be involved in pre-silicon modeling and architecture. The group interacts daily with Software, VLSI and Systems teams on a variety of topics including pre-silicon architecture, modeling, and various levels of debugging/verification. You will be responsible for performing independent research and may have ownership of specific design areas. You will also work to build familiarity with technology advancements in relevant scientific, commercial, and academic circles, and may be assigned to represent well established company technical interests in industry conferences and/or standards committees.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Design and develop algorithms for next generation video coding technologies and standards.
• Develop new video processing and codec technologies for embedded applications.
• Work with a general understanding of competing technologies in the area of focus.
• Participates in the process of creating detailed product requirements from high level objectives.
• Work to understand the context in which new technologies will be used and the requirements that the technology must fulfill for success.
• Create early-stage conceptual models that demonstrate feasibility.
• Create applications level software and/or embedded signal processing software and/or prototype hardware or related firmware that are efficient, modular, well documented, bug free and understandable by others skilled in the art.
• Build relationships with peers and other teams to achieve objectives, maintains objectivity, gives and welcomes feedback on design/implementation decisions.
• May organize and/or deliver internal and external technology presentations and feasibility/proof of performance demonstrations.
• May represent company technology interests in industry associations or standards bodies based on guidance from more senior staff or management.
Qualifications:
• Master's or PhD Degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering (or equivalent) and 2+ years related experience.
• Extensive experience in video quality optimization of digital video compression systems. Fully grasps the potential and limitations of stages like Pre-Processing, GOP management, Hierarchical ME, Intra-Coding, Mode Selection, 2D Transforms, Quantization, Rate Allocation, HRD buffer management, Entropy Coding.
• Fluent in the differences between H.264/AVC, MPEG2-part 2, as well as of the upcoming HEVC video coding standard and its extensions.
• Thorough background in digital image processing theory, including spatial and temporal representations, 3D video, color theory, 1D and 2D digital filter design.
• Proficiency in C and/or C++ programming.
• Computer architecture, and code optimization basics.
• Has a track record of successful research accomplishments, published papers, and/or patent applications.
• Must have a methodical, detailed, and results-oriented approach to problem solving.
• Must demonstrate good interpersonal and written communication skills, and operate with a collaborative, team-oriented work ethic.
Considered a plus:
• Understanding of MPEG2-part 1 transport stream format, including timing-model and packetization.
• Depth in Applied Mathematics, Numerical and Statistical Techniques. This includes Matrix factorization, Clustering, Classifiers, Linear and non-Linear Regression, Similarity Transformation, Principle Component, Sensitivity Analysis, State-Space Representation, Neural Networks…
• Understanding of advanced display technologies and related processing.
• Proficiency in Matlab and/or similar numerical computing environments/tools.
• Advanced scripting and batch/shell programming.
• Windows programming skills, TCP/UDP communications, Multi-threaded App debugging.
• Direct work experience within the broadcast industry.
